Medical Causes of Weight Gain
Are you perplexed on seeing your weight increasing despite following a proper schedule of exercise and diet? If yes, then your weight gain could be a result of some underlying medical problem. This article will throw light on some medical conditions that can lead to weight gain.
Though sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits are the prime causes of weight gain, they are not the only causes. Weight gain can be caused by some medical problems and ailments too.
Hypothyroidism is one such medical problem that makes a person put on a lot of weight. People suffering from this problem have hormonal imbalances in the body and have an underactive thyroid which slows down the metabolic rate of the body. Slow metabolism in turn leads to slow burning of fat, eventually causing weight gain.
People who have diabetes can also suffer from weight gain. In addition, other medical problems like Cushing’s syndrome and nephrotic syndrome can also lead to this problem. Hormonal imbalances in the body can also trigger weight gain, especially in women.
It has been found that women suffering from Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) also tend to put on unnecessary weight. However, obesity is both a cause as well as a symptom of PCOS.
Women should properly get themselves examined if they have unexplained weight gain. This is because it has been found that certain tumors, like ovarian tumor, can lead to a woman putting on unnecessary pounds.
Along with the above given medical causes, people suffering from eating disorders also suffer from weight gain. In addition, stress and anxiety are some of the other causes.
Also, certain medications can lead to weight gain, especially anti-depressants and even drugs that help in treating diabetes. Not to forget, steroids are often responsible for weight gain.
Above given are the various medical causes of weight gain and one should be aware of such causes to get a timely detection and treatment of the underlying medical condition.
