Importance of nursery rhymes for your children

Who does not remember ‘jack and Jill’ or ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ or ‘baa baa black sheep’? Even as adults we can still remember the words and the tunes. Well that’s the power and impact of nursery rhymes.

We all know that the first six years of child are the foundation years for brain development. Nursery rhymes make things interesting for the children as much possible thus making learning procedure more fun filled for both parents as well as children.

Children of all ages enjoy listening to and being involved in rhymes. Nursery rhymes are an invaluable resource and provide an ideal starting point for cross- circular activities like phonics, numbers, shapes, vocabulary and general knowledge.

They can also be used to develop children’s thinking and understanding by stimulating their imagination and firing their enthusiasm. You all will be happy to read that when important cross-curricular activities are taught through something as interesting as nursery rhymes, learning becomes fun and remains so, for life.

Children have been hearing nursery rhymes since their toddler years and when these very same loveable rhyme characters are used to teach them other concepts, it makes the learning experience more varied and it also has long term impact.

But as adults, we need to be careful in our choice of rhymes for children. Our selection should be those that teach positive concepts and are not unknowingly teaching them wrong values. Choose the correct rhymes and avoid rhymes that teach incorrect habits.

Rhymes will help in developing the memory and sequencing skills in children which are important for moths. When you do rhymes together, it helps enhance bonding with your children and improves his/ her self esteem.
