Importance of Mouthwash

April 21, 2009

importance-of-mouthwashWhen getting ready, we never forget applying deodorants and body sprays for a refreshing body odor. While having bath and applying deodorants is considered to be essential for maintaining good body hygiene, have you ever wondered about the importance of oral dental care? It is as important, if not more, as your overall body care.

When we talk of oral care, we cannot forget the mentioning of mouthwash. It is a solution which helps in warding off bad breath by preventing the formation of plaque and other oral problems like gum diseases and infections. A proper oral hygiene is when along with regular brushing and flossing, we pay equal importance to mouthwash.

There are a number of mouthwashes available and they can be medicated as well as non-medicated. Additionally, along with being used for medicinal purposes and for the treatment of infections, especially gum infections and ulcers, mouthwashes are also popularly used for a fresh breath. It is for this reason you’ll find a lot of mouthwashes in mint flavor. Thus, using a mouthwash, you can ward off your bad breath.

Mouthwashes are also used for preventing tooth decay. It has been found that using fluoride based mouthwash can help in preventing tooth decay.

This is because use of mouthwash helps in preventing bacterial infections. However, along with using mouthwash, don’t neglect the importance of brushing, flossing and other essential dental care. After all, mouthwashes only add on to dental benefits; they do not replace any oral care component.

While we have seen the importance of mouthwash, both for fresh breath and healthy teeth and gums, there is also a word of caution for you all. Don’t overuse mouthwashes as most of them contain some amount of alcohol and thus overuse can be harmful. Also, along with buying mouthwashes, there are also certain basic ones that can be prepared at home.
