November 28, 2008

We all have heard of the importance of vitamins, calcium and other nutrients for healthy living. But very few of us are aware that magnesium too plays an equally important role in keeping us healthy and fit. Did you know that about 50% of magnesium is found naturally in our bones? That’s not it; magnesium is also located in our muscles, tissues, organs and blood. It is a bone-building nutrient which prevents muscles form frequent contracting. Thus the next time you have cramps, it might be due to magnesium deficiency. Magnesium aids the body in various functions and is thus pivotal for healthy living. Given below are some reasons which substantiate the reason why magnesium should be a part of our daily diet.

We all know that we should consume dietary calcium for healthy bones and body. However, a low magnesium condition implies improper utilization of calcium as the latter cannot be properly absorbed and utilized without the help of magnesium in the body. Moreover, nutritional magnesium has been found to aid in energy production, healthy functioning of nervous system, healthy glucose metabolism and muscle activity. Moreover, magnesium also aids in protein metabolism and plays an important role in keeping your heart and circulatory system healthy. Thus, magnesium plays a vital role in keeping you healthy. This is primarily evident by the number of problems which occur due to deficiency of magnesium. These include loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and general weakness. It can also lead to muscle contractions, spasms, and even to irregular and abnormal heartbeats.

Looking at the various benefits of magnesium, it should be included in our diet through intake of green vegetables, beans, peas and various nuts. Unrefined grains can also provide your body with required magnesium content for healthy living.
