Ill-effects of crash diet and vigorous exercising in lactating women
Undoubtedly breast feeding aids weight loss in lactating mothers. With every feed, the mother burns about 200-300 calories in her body. But at the same time breast feeding also propels hunger and a need for a balanced diet with a great emphasis on calcium and iron rich diet. However, in the haste to loose weight, when mother’s go on for crash diets or vigorous exercises, they possesses several problems in their body. Some of these problems are mentioned below:
Problem of decreased lactation:
An improper diet and bodily stress in the form of vigorous exercise that too done without medical supervision greatly affect the mother’s ability to produce milk which enormously harms the baby along with mother as well.
Problem of infection:
It’s a known fact that immunity of a woman drops during and after pregnancy to large extent. Recovering the same previous immunity levels takes a good amount of time. In-between woman becomes prone to more infections. Working in closed spaces, sweating etc could make her all more vulnerable to many more infections.
Problem of decreased calcium levels:
The surge of hormones that are normal in new mother’s body often affects her calcium level. During the pregnancy stage itself, woman finds her body becoming more supple and flexible. This is due to release of certain hormones which aid in labour and delivery. The flip side of this is that such flexibility also makes a new mother more prone to bone injury. Therefore, over exercising could lead to sprains and fractures.
Problem of hormonal imbalances:
All new mothers experience a surge of hormones. This coupled with physical stress due to over exercising, mood disorders, which becomes very common after delivery and post –partum disorders; all greatly affects the mother as well her child to a certain extent.
