How use of toners benefits your skin

August 12, 2008

How many of us really know the importance of a toner? Did you ever think that what a big mistake you commit for your skin care regimen every time you skip the step of applying a toner? We all know that a cleansing is the first step to healthy and beautiful skin. But along with dirt, grime, excess oil and makeup, cleansing also robs away the protective layer of your skin or acid mantle.

Our skin is naturally acidic, normally with a ph balance of between five and six. After cleansing, due to the alkaline nature of soap, the ph balance of skin gets disturbed. When this happens, your skin needs to work overtime to restore the balance, but using a toner helps restore this balance quickly.

It is very essential that you choose a right kind of toner for your skin type. An alcohol based toner should be avoided as it dries your skin. All those who have dry skin, should never use a toner altogether.

You can always use a toner after washing up your face, just spritz a little on a wad of cotton and gently dab your skin with it. Sunscreen can be followed up by a toner during daytime and by moisturizer at night time. If you are a kind who spends a lot of time outdoors and have an oily skin, you can use toner during the day to clean your skin.

However, now-a-days soaps and face washes are appropriately formulated to maintain the ph balance of your skin, thus making the role of a toner relatively less vital. But still you can use toner to add the polishing touch to your cleansing routine, as toners remove the diet traces, oil and makeup that cleanser had left behind.
