How to Treat Cold Sores

Medically termed as Herpes labialis, cold sores or fever blisters are quite common and contagious. They usually form on the lips, chin, cheeks and nostrils and are caused by the herpes simple virus. Cold sores display some distinctive symptoms before coming like tingling or burning sensation, redness, itching or pain around lips or mouth. While it is not easy to prevent or cure cold sores, there are ways by which you can reduce the frequency of their occurrence as well as their magnitude. Given below are some steps you need to take to guard yourself against cold sores.

To reduce and prevent cold sores from reoccurring, you should regularly use a lip moisturizer to prevent your lips from becoming dry and chapped. Also, limit your exposure to sun or UV rays and thus always use a lip balm which has an SPF of at least 15. There are certain triggers like stress which can activate the virus causing cold sores. Thus, try to reduce stress as much as possible a sit is one of the prime triggers of cold sores. You can try relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation or music therapy to reduce your levels of daily stress. You also need to keep your immune system strong and healthy through intake of proper nutritious diet. Also get enough of sleep required for relaxation and rejuvenation of mind and body.

Since cold sores are contagious, you should take preventive measures to stop its expansion and spread. Avoid kissing or any mouth-to-body activities during this period. You also need to avoid sharing of utensils or clothes and remember to frequently wash your hands. Also, you should throw the toothbrush you used during the time your were infected as that can lead to reoccurrence of cold sores. These simple preventive tips can help you get rid of the problem of cold sores.
