How to start sex talk with your children?

August 25, 2008

At a certain age, there is curiosity about sex and teenagers try to gather as much as information from their friends and other sources regarding the same. But the best way is that parents should talk about the sexuality issue with their children in open. Try to have a healthy, open atmosphere at home so that the kids feel free to talk to about sex related issues with you.

The best ways to start talking is when your child is young. Don’t wait till she he/she reaches puberty, for that can be an awkward age! Discuss sex related issues with your kids as a matter of routine and in a matter of fact way, don’t turn into a life-altering discussion! You can even use everyday media as conversation starters, like soaps, ads, TV programs and magazines. Make use of books, leaflets and websites if you need more information or ideas and tips on how to start talking. Trust me once you start, it’s easy to carry on! Also recognize that as your child grows, he/she needs privacy and may not always want to talk to you about everything, so be intuitive. You can even talk to other parents having kids of the same age group about how they answer difficult questions and discuss tough issues.

Discuss issues like safe sex, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases plus the effects of teen pregnancy with your kids. You can even go with your teenager to a doctor or sexual counselor to discuss about various new contraceptives. Make sure your child knows about STI’s plus the adequate precautions for the same.

At the end try to accept the fact that your teenager will probably not have the same values as you have when it comes to sex. This is an inevitable part of him/her growing up.
