August 7, 2008
Teenage time is a very sensitive stage of a person’s development where as a parent you need to take extra precaution so as to prevent your child from developing wrong and harmful habits. Many teenagers get into the bad habit of drugs due to peer pressure, fashion or just for excitement. Thus, it is essential to keep a check on your teens so that they do not tread on the path of self-destruction.
Many teenagers get into the addictive power of drugs to attain recognition, fame or to just get over some kind of depression. Nothing can be more frustrating and disheartening for a parent than to know that their child has gone into the threatening problem of drug addiction. When it comes to teen drug use, it is any day better to prevent this use from turning into an addiction which can literally destroy and annihilate the happy and healthy life of a person. It is in this regard that the parent’s role becomes critical and they have to adopt the role of a friend, advisor, protector and even a strict role to keep their children on the right road of life.
Instead of getting angry and panicky, parents need to involve themselves with the personal life of their teens so that they can counsel them as a friend and thus prevent them from getting into the harmful habit of drugs. In addition, as a parent you should keep a check on the kind of company your teen engages in because company and friends play a vital role in determining or changing the behavior of a child. Get involved in the overall lifestyle of your child and encourage him to take part in extra curricular activities so that the child can occupy his mind in creative concepts. In addition, you should inculcate the family morals and values in your child from the beginning itself along with tutoring him on the harmful effects of drugs. It is only once you involve yourself with your child’s life that you can prevent your teen from treading wrong paths as a teen seeks solace from drugs only if he feels lonely, isolated, depressed or if he gets into a wrong company. By keeping a healthy check on your teen’s lifestyle, you can easily help the child to live a happy and a healthy life.
