How to prevent Childhood Injuries

October 16, 2008

Children are usually inquisitive and explorative by nature. They try to explore everything to get familiar with the world. As a parent, you need to pay extra attention during these early days so as to prevent any unwanted childhood injury. House, the safest place for a child, can become dangerous if proper care and attention is not taken. You need to properly childproof your house to prevent common injuries like scalds, poisoning, drowning, fires, falls and choking.

You need to childproof your house properly to prevent accidents and injuries like poisoning or choking. Don’t keep medicines or any chemicals near the child’s approach as a small child generally tends to put everything he finds in his mouth. Similarly, keep all small items like pins, buttons and other tiny stuffs also beyond the child’s reach to prevent choking. Also avoid buying toys with small, removable parts. Even plastic bags can prove dangerous and even fatal for the small child as that can lead to suffocation. Thus, ensure to keep these small but significant items beyond your child’s reach.

Many children face serious injuries due to water. Never leave your child unattended in bathrooms to prevent incidents of drowning and scalds. Remember, young children can drown in even less tan one inch of water. Like water, fire too is equally dangerous for the small child. Keep him away from all inflammable items. You also need to protect your child from injuries due to falls. This can be done by avoiding use of baby walkers or using them only under guidance. This is because baby walkers can lead to various unwanted injuries and accidents.  Also install window guards to prevent a child’s fall.

By taking these simple steps, you can help your child grow in a safe and healthy way.
