How To Prepare A Child For The Arrival Of A Sibling
You must have noticed many children getting frustrated, angry and sad due to the arrival of a sibling. These adverse emotions usually stem up from insecurity and thus you need to prepare your child in advance for the arrival of a sibling so that he is accepted by your first child with love and happiness. Given below are some steps which can help you out.
Most importantly, never hide your pregnancy from your child as suddenly getting a new sibling into the house will not be easily acceptable to your first child. Thus, you need to prepare him from the beginning itself. After the first trimester of your pregnancy, you should inform your child and start preparing him mentally and emotionally. Never neglect your first child as that will lead to insecurity followed by emotional void eventually leading to adverse feelings in the mind of your child.
Thus, your child will always look upon the new baby as a foe as he sees him a competitor for your love. As a parent, you need to inform the child about the coming of sibling way in advance and try to foster happy feelings in him. Tell him you are getting his friend with whom he can play and enjoy. Similarly, involve him in preparations for the new one so that he too welcomes the sibling with happiness and with positivity and love. You can ask your elder child to help you in various activities like bringing a diaper, taking care of the new one, etc as that helps in building up of a bond.
When you are hospitalized, ensure that the child is not neglected. Also, make your child talk and get connected with the new one rather than just avoiding him. Last but not the least, never neglect your elder child. Make him feel loved even more so that anger, aggression and negative thoughts have no place in his heart.
