How to Make Mashed Potatoes

If there is one food item which a majority of people of all age group like, then it is potato. Potatoes are consumed in a variety of ways as they can be baked, barbequed, fried, and boiled. You can cook potatoes in whatever way you feel like.

One of the most common and liked dish of potatoes is mashed potatoes. It is a dish in itself and also complements other dishes of the meal. Instead of running after cooking books to help you make mashed potatoes, read this article and easily cook this delicious dish with minimal time and effort.

Before cooking, remember that the perfect recipe of any dish lies in the taste of the consumer. Thus, make mashed potatoes according to your specific tastes. Here are some basic cooking tips. Usually high starch potatoes like russet and Yukon Gold are the best candidates for mashed potato dish. After you have chosen potatoes to be mashed, follow the given steps.

Wash the potatoes with running water and then peel them. Once you peel the potatoes, you can easily spot some bad spots. Cut those bad spots and then cut your potatoes in half and even in quarters. The next step demands that you place the cut pieces of potatoes in a pan with water and little salt. Cover it and bring it to a gentle boil. Once your potatoes become soft after boiling, you can drain away the water.

After the preliminary step of selecting, washing, peeling and boiling of potatoes is done, you need to mash them. You can add some butter and then slowly add milk and cream in small amounts as and when you are mashing the potatoes.

Continue mashing until you get your desired smoothness and fluffiness. However, do not over mash the potatoes. Then add whatever flavor and spices you want to add like salt, pepper, garlic and even cheese for the topping. Follow these tips and make mashed potatoes with ease and according to your taste.
