How To Make Best Out Of Parent-Teacher Meetings In School

February 19, 2009

School is a place for children but at least twice a year parents find themselves going to their child’s school, sitting in miniature chairs and facing teachers with queries or complaints. For making the best from such parent-teacher meeting, some of the suggestions are written below-just read them out!

Make sure you go prepared, because teacher has limited time to spend with one particular child. Mind it that if you are going to waste this time thinking about what you want to ask, you’ll feel very frustrated at the end of the meeting. Instead, make a note or list of all that you want to ask the teacher.

Whenever you think about what all you have to ask the teacher regarding your child, try to be objective as much as possible. Think about the class point of view and not just about any individual child-your child.

Try to be specific as much as possible. Instead of saying, ‘my child is having a problem with his homework’- state the actual problem such as ‘my child has to stay up late finishing his or her homework every night’.Try to be constructive in your approach whenever you talk with your child’s teacher.

Speak your mind and voice your opinion by all means. Keep in mind that you will be able to get your point across more successfully if you phrase your opinion in a more constructive manner rather than pointing out teacher’s shortcomings.

Make sure when teachers says something about your child, you listen carefully to her words. Don’t jump to defend your child, just sit and try to listen what the teacher is saying.

You can always involve teacher in solving any study- related problems that you may be facing with your child, take the teacher’s opinion and try to make the child aware of it also.
