How to Improve your Social Skills

May 19, 2009

socialskillsHuman beings are social entities and we all should know the art of harmoniously living in a society. Social skills imply interaction and communication with people so that one can increase our friend and social circle.

While you must have met many people who are open and expressive in parties, schools, and social gatherings, there are also many people who prefer to stay in their shell or are simply introverts.

However, you need to know the art of effectively communicating with people and given below are some helpful tips that can help you improve your social skills.

To improve your social skills, you first need to develop self confidence. Do not feel shy and scared of talking in public. Trust your abilities and develop confidence. However, do not think that you will acquire good social skills in a jiffy. It is a slow process and takes time.

Once you develop confidence, you should try to converse with people as much as possible. There are many people who find it difficult to start a conversation or continue one.

Also, shy people often wait for the other person to begin a conversation. However, you need to overcome your shyness and if not vocal communication, a small smile can initiate a conversation and build a bond. Non vocal communication is equally important as your body language and facial expressions convey a lot.

To become a good speaker, you should first become a good listener. Pay attention to the conversations of other people and you’ll automatically gain confidence of speaking in public. To acquire social skills, you should not sacrifice your true self.

There are many people who mask their real self and instead wear an artificial identity. Do not do that. Be true to yourself and keep your integrity and identity intact. To become socially acceptable, you don’t need to change your identity.

Thus, follow the given tips to improve your social skills.
