How to Help your Child to Read
The strong foundation of a child’s future begins with education and education has its roots in reading and writing. Thus, it is important for you as a parent to take steps to inculcate reading habits in your child, from the beginning itself. You cannot make a child read by scolding him. Instead, this is a quality which needs to be inculcated in the child and the following tips can help you out.
Always remember that children love to imitate their elders. Be a role model for your child and read good positive books so that your child follows your footsteps. By building up a reading atmosphere in your house, you can help your child to develop healthy reading skills. This in turn can help him grow intellectually along with aiding in improvement of his communication skills. Moreover, reading books, especially positive, good quality books, is helpful for healthy development of a child. Additionally, if your child starts loving to read, he will never face major problems in his school.
It is but natural that small children would not understand what they read. They usually prefer pictorial books with illustrations. Provide those to them and help them in reading. That is to say, first read out the story to your child, ask him to read himself and then explain the meaning of it to him. Sharing such reading moments with your child also help in establishing a strong bond between the child and the parent.
These days’ audio books are available which help the child in fast understanding and reading of books. Also, as a parent, you must make sure that you provide your child with books of his choice so that he enjoys his reading time and does not consider it as a kind of punishment. Follow these simple tips to help your child inculcate the healthy habit of reading.
