How to Ensure a Safe and Sound Sleep for your Baby

September 11, 2008

Seeing your baby sleep safely and soundly is the desire of every parent. Sleep is very important for babies to aid in their development and one needs to ensure that the cot in which the baby is put to sleep is a safe and secure one. You must have heard of cot deaths and thus the silent sleeping of the baby can sometimes bring fear in your mind as to whether your baby is safe or not. To prevent your baby from any unwanted accident, follow the tips given below to ensure that your child receives a safe and a sound sleep.

You first need to ensure that the cot is safe and secure with no room for the baby to fall down or get suffocated. Place security pillows on the sides of baby but ensure that they are placed properly so as to prevent suffocation by them. Make your baby sleep on his back in ‘feet-to-foot’ position. This implies placing the baby in such a way that his feet are facing the foot of the cot. You must have heard from various people that keeping the baby warm is an ideal condition to retain his healthy condition. Quite true- but don’t make the room temperature too hot that the baby feels uncomfortable. It has been found that 18 degrees centigrade is the ideal temperature for the baby’s room. Never keep hot water bottle in a baby’s cot. Whenever you need to feed him, be with him and then remove the bottle from the cot. To make your baby comfortable, his clothes as well as his cot blanket and sheet should be made of cotton. Do not cover the baby’s face as it might lead to suffocation. Last but not the least; keep the baby’s cot in your room for at least the initial 6 months so that both you and the baby have a safe, sound and a happy sleep.
