How to Differentiate between Depression and Baby Blues

November 4, 2009

depressionbabyblueAre your mood swings and episodes of feeling low and down after pregnancy a sign of baby blues or depression? One needs to carefully understand the various signs and symptoms of one’s mind and body to properly take care of it. This article will help you in differentiating between depression and baby blues.

Baby blues refers to mood swings a woman faces after giving birth to a baby. Such women experience symptoms like irritability, sadness, and a feeling of inadequacy.

They also experience sudden episodes of crying and helplessness. However, the symptoms of baby blues last for a few days only. If your symptoms last for a long time, then they may be signs of postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression also displays the same symptoms like baby blues but the symptoms are more severe and last for a longer time. A woman suffering from postpartum depression will complain of extreme mood swings, which in turn affects her personal and professional life. Such women find it difficult to take proper care of their babies. In addition, they tend to suffer from a feeling of lack and loss of control.

The mood swings of women suffering from postpartum depression can be extreme and it can also sometimes lead to the woman harming herself or her baby.

Postpartum depression leads to physical symptoms too like extreme fatigue which is chronic. Also, such women are more prone to being affected by infections and ailments.

Thus, if you find yourself feeling sad, low, and irritated, then you must try to find out the underlying cause of it. Your irritation and anger can be both a symptom of baby blues as well as that of postpartum depression. To differentiate between the two, you have to focus on two main parameters of intensity and duration.
