How to Clean Woolen Blankets

January 8, 2009

With winters around, the most common thing you’ll get to see in every house is blankets and quilts. They are a necessity and similarly, cleaning them properly is also a necessity to ensure optimum hygienic levels. Many germs, dust and unwanted particles get accumulated in blankets and thus regular cleaning of them is a must to prevent allergies, and other ailments. How to clean blankets is a question which comes in every woman’s mind. Well, the answer is simple. Cleaning blankets is not as tough as most of us think. Just follow the given steps and keep your blankets clean and healthy.

Blankets can be of various kinds- woolen, cotton or acrylic. Let’s look at the cleaning procedure of woolen blankets. Before washing a wool blanket, you should first check the labels to ensure whether the blankets are washable or not. Also, most of us just tend to put the blanket in the machine. However, first weigh the blanket and check it against your machine’s maximum weight. This will prevent damage to machine as well as blanket. In case of any stains on the blanket, you should treat it with a stain remover before inserting it in the machine.

Also, wash a wool blanket with wool-friendly powder and choose a gentle machine cycle with a minimum spin. There are also many blankets which are not suitable or fit enough to get inside the machine. These need to be washed with hand. It’s a simple procedure. In a large tub of cold water, add one measure of wool friendly detergent and gently push the blanket in the bucket. Just like washing, you also need to take care about the drying of blankets. You can dry them out by placing them on a clean table over a spread dry towel.
Follow these simple steps and keep your woolen blankets clean, dust-free and hygienic.
