How to celebrate dhanteras festival

Do you know that dhanteras is considered to be the one of the most sacred days of the year. This day is also known as ‘dhantrayodashi’ or ‘dhanwantari triodasi’ by people. This festival is observed two days before the diwali and is considered to herald the onset of the festival of lights. This day is dedicated to goddess laxmi. Goddess laxmi is worshipped by people belonging to business community to usher in wealth, prosperity, good fortune and success in life.

Laxmi pujan is performed in evenings on this day and tiny clay divas are lighted to drive away the evil spirits from the place. Numbers of devotional songs, bhajans of goddess laksmi are sung and various traditional sweets are offered to goddess. Dhanteras is considered to be an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar which brings immense eternal good fortune to its worshippers.

People all over India rises at dawn, bathe and wear fresh clothes. Even some people observe a fast on this day which is broken after the earthen lamp is lit in the front of the main door of the house. Doors remain open and neighbours get together to share sweets and tiny lamps. A woman of house also makes colorful rangolis, alpana or floor patterns with number of colors or pulses from kitchen. They make small footprints of goddess to symbolize her entry into their houses and business establishments.

On this auspicious day, Hindus all over the country purchases precious metals like silver, gold, and platinum either in form of jewellery, utensils or coins for good luck. Jeweller’s shops remain open till late at nights and are crowded throughout the day.

This festival is also regarded auspicious for setting up new business ventures or projects, buying cars or even fixing wedding dates for unmarried people.
