How to Burp a Baby

February 11, 2009

You must have often seen parents trying to make their new born babies burp. Most of us wonder at this activity. However, making babies burp is one of the most important steps to ensure their perfect health. Babies tend to swallow a lot of air and it is essential to expel that extra air from their tummies to ensure their perfect health, safety and comfort. Babies who are unable to burp often become cranky due to discomfort and it can lead to further problems. Given below are some ways by which you can help your child burp.

After having read about the importance of burping in babies, you should also be aware of the fact that bottle fed babies are in more need for burping effectively and frequently than breast fed ones. If you are wondering why, there is a scientific cause to it. Babies who are bottle fed have faster flow of milk which in turn forces frequent gulping of air by babies. However, all babies need to burp and here are some ways by which you can help out your baby.

Gentle patting on the back of the baby helps in making him burp. That is why you must have noticed many parents repeatedly patting their babies on their back after meals. However, be gentle so as to avoid hurting the sensitive body of the baby. While making your child burp, ensure you keep him in a comfortable position like laps or over the shoulders. In a lap position, you need to place the baby’s head on your thigh and using circular motion, pat the baby’s back.

There are also ways by which you can prevent excess gas formation in child. Feeding baby in an upright position lessens the chances of your baby swallowing air. Also, during the first two months, you should try to burp your baby after every 5 minutes between and after feeding. Follow these tips to ensure the comfort and happy living of your baby.
