How to baby- proof your house

July 26, 2008

Before your baby begins to creep or crawl, you must baby- proof your house-that is, make it safe for curious little fingers. Make sure you remove everything that looks remotely enticing or dangerous. As you remove these items out the way, replace them with interesting safe things your baby can play with. A stimulating environment contributes to the development of creativity in a child.

House in general
Move your furniture away from windows. Also you can move furniture in front of many electrical outlets as possible to protect against electric shocks. Make sure you insert plastic covers in all unused electrical outlets and put a large box life covers over those that are in use. Replace the outlet covers with childproof covers. Also, cover all unused telephone outlets with duct tape. Try to hide all electrical and telephone cord, as babies like to chew on them. Make sure you store your iron out of the sight to prevent the baby from tugging on its cord and puling it onto his head. Never leave hot iron unattended. Move away the ashtrays, pipes, cigarettes, matches and lighters out of their reach as tobacco can be fatal when eaten up by a small child.

Kitchen
Move all the wines and liquors to locked cabinets. Do not leave leftover drinks sitting out there, toddler can find and drink them as alcohol is toxic in nature and can harm your baby. Put all the vitamins, medicines, wastebaskets, plastic bags, glassware, knives and other potentially dangerous items in locked cupboard. Move all the household cleaners, detergents and similar products out of toddlers reach. Remove all tablecloths that toddlers can pull to harm themselves. Make sure you tie the plastic bags in knot and throw them away after use. Also if your stove had knobs on front panel either remove the knobs or install knob covers when you are not using a stove.
