July 15, 2009

askpayraiseWhat motivates you to work? There can be multiple answers to this question like job satisfaction, challenging job profile, healthy work environment and many others.  But one motivating point we all would answer is that of salary.

Well, there is no denying the fact that salary and economic considerations are always important when one does a job. Thus, if you are wondering about ways in which you can ask your boss for a pay raise, then read below and get hold of some handy tips.

There are usually two main ways by which a person moves financially ahead, either by changing jobs for a better paying one or by asking his present employer for a salary raise. If you are of the latter category, then this article can help you out.

First of all, you must be well acquainted with your organization’s pay practices. There are many companies who do a yearly appraisal and there are also many which offer pay raises multiple times in a year.

In addition, you should also familiarize yourself with the appraisal criterion of your organization so as to know whether your organization pays on the basis of time scale or performance.

If you are in a private organization, then performance is of paramount importance. If you want a pay raise, make yourself worthy of it. Be a consistent performer so that you become invaluable for your organization.

During your appraisal meeting, you must be able to highlight your achievements and value so that your employer willingly gives you a pay raise of your choice.

In addition, also bring to light any additional responsibility you have handled for your company so that you can display your caliber for a promotion too.

Most importantly, before asking for a pay raise, you should research and know about the average pay scale people of your occupation and position are getting.

After being armed with relevant information, you can put your request for a pay scale. Use your negotiating power and as a norm, always ask a little higher than what you expect but don’t be unrealistic in your demand.

Thus, follow the above given tips to ask for a pay raise from your employer.
