How Should Babies Sleep

January 1, 2009

With the coming of a new life, the whole world keeps revolving around him. The baby becomes the center of family’s attention and it is also necessary as babies are delicate and sensitive who need proper care and attention. Newborns sleep a lot, usually 16 hours a day. Since a majority of babies’ time is spent in sleeping, as a parent, you should be aware of some important positions and ways in which a baby should sleep to ensure healthy growth and development.

Sleep position of your baby is an important thing to consider while putting your child to sleep. You must have often heard about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and its relation with sleeping position of the baby. It is usually advised that the baby should be made to sleep on his back till the time he does not learn to roll by himself. Similarly, don’t allow your baby to sleep on his stomach as that can be linked with reduced oxygen intake and can also lead to cases of suffocation.

Once the baby is old enough to roll by himself, then he can choose a comfortable sleeping position for himself. Many parents believe that making the baby sleep in the bed with them is a condition of higher security and safety. However, this is unfortunately not the case as many a times, many babies tend to get suffocated when sleeping in the bed between the parents. Instead, make them sleep in a cot and keep the cot close to your bed.

In the early years of the child, it is advisable to make the child sleep in your own room rather than putting him in a separate room. Babies and parents both feel comfortable, safe and secure when in each other’s company. Don’t try to make the baby independent immediately; give him time to grow as having a sound and healthy sleep is essential for the baby’s healthy development.
