How Should Babies Sleep?

April 23, 2009

babies-sleepA baby spends most of its first few months sleeping and parents often wonder where the baby should sleep, for how long and in what position.  These questions are very important too and often preoccupy first time parents.

Sleep Posture
The most frequently asked question is that relating to the sleep posture of the baby. Parents ask if they should let the baby nap on its stomach, side or back.  Until the baby can roll over, it is recommended that parents place the baby on its back to sleep.  This reduces the risk of crib death or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).  An infant sleeps better on its stomach, but it is believed that he may not be able to turn its face to one side, and perhaps suffocate. Moreover, there might be germs in the mattress that he could inhale.

Once the child can roll over, allow him to settle down in the position he is most comfortable in.  He will sleep comfortably without any interference.

Where should a baby sleep?

The best bed for the baby is a baby cot with walls that can be pulled down during playtime and raised up at night.  The best place for the baby cot is next to the parent’s bed.  Allowing the child to sleep with you in your own bed may be dangerous.  It is possible for the child to suffocate.  Moreover, it will be difficult to have him sleep alone once he grows up, and this will be a problem for the parents.  On the other hand, it is risky to put him to sleep in separate room as you will not be able to monitor him throughout the night in case something happens.  So place his cot in your room while he is still an infant and get him used to sleeping in it.
