November 18, 2008

One of the oldest and often heard of disease, scurvy is common in children and is a result of Vitamin C deficiency. Scurvy usually begins showing its presence through general symptoms of exhaustion and weakness and finally leads to bleeding of gums. It can also lead to pain in joints, liver spots and poor healing capacity of wounds. Given below are some natural ways by which you can cure scurvy.

Since scurvy is a result of vitamin C deficiency, you need to increase its intake through diet. Indian gooseberry is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C. To naturally treat scurvy, gooseberry should be powdered with an equal quantity of sugar and this powder should be given in doses of one teaspoon, three times daily, with milk. You should include fresh fruits in your diet with high vitamin C content like oranges, sweet lemons, watermelons, grapefruits and others. Lemon is another useful home remedy for the treatment of scurvy. Extract the juice of one full lemon, mix it with a teaspoon of honey and put in a glass of warm water. Drink this mixture twice a day to get quick treatment from scurvy. Just like fresh fruits, you can also find vitamin C in green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli. Potato is believed to be very effective in the treatment of scurvy. Similarly, you can use jaundice berry for scurvy treatment. The leaves of the plant are anti-scorbutic or anti-scurvy. Another effective natural treatment is with the help of mango powder. This is because aamchur, as it is popularly known in India, is known to have high content of vitamin C in it.

Eat a well balanced diet and follow these natural home remedies to get rid of scurvy and to even prevent it.
