Home Remedies for Gout

January 10, 2009

A kind of arthritis, gout is a result of excess uric acid deposition in the body. It is usually a problem associated with old age. In persons suffering from gout, the uric acid crystals get deposited in the joints instead of getting flushed in the kidneys. The usual symptoms associated with gout are swellings, redness and pain in areas like joints of knees, feet, hands and others. Being overweight, heavy use of alcohol and exposure to environmental lead are some causes of gout. Given below are some home remedies which help in preventing and treating the problem of gout.

As mentioned above, overweight and excess alcohol consumption increases risk of gout. Thus, keep your weight under control through proper diet and regular exercise. Control intake of animal protein, especially lean meat and organ meat products. Also, keep your blood pressure under control as that too is a trigger for gout. Strictly avoid alcohol intake, especially when you have gout. Also, drink eight glasses of fluids every day as that helps in flushing out toxins. This also prevents formation of kidney stones.  When you have gout, these are the remedies you should follow. Avoid pressurizing the area affected. This implies avoiding putting weight on the joints. Also, keep your joint elevated as that helps in reducing inflammation. There are also certain food items whose intake can help reduce symptoms associated with gout. Cherries, which are high in vitamin C content, are helpful for the treatment of gouts. Similarly, apples and safflower are useful. Alfalfa reduces content of uric acid and thus helps in preventing and treating gout. Also, drink juice of half a lemon in one glass of water to relieve gout. Applying ice on the affected areas is a simple way of reducing pain caused by gout. Similarly, place a piece of white flannel cloth soaked in warm castor oil. Follow these simple steps to prevent as well treat the problem of gout.
