Hip Exercises

July 22, 2008

Hip is one of the most important areas of one’s body which is involved in a lot of movements like flexion, extension and abduction amongst others. Thus, it is essential to keep this portion of one’s body in a fit and a healthy state so as to live a comfortable and a happy life. To prevent the hip from wear and tear, one should indulge in proper exercises so as to strengthen the muscles that support the hip area. Exercises with a proper diet would help in strengthening the mobility of the hips along with helping in the reduction of excessive fat which might have been deposited in that area. Thus, hip exercises not only help in providing a healthy body but also help in increasing one’s confidence by providing one with a fit and a healthy body image.

There are a number of exercises to improve the strength and flexibility of the hip and the thigh region. One of such exercise is squats which involves the workout of gluteals, hamstrings and quadriceps. In this type of exercise, one first needs to stand with feet hip distance apart. Then one should sit backwards onto heels and squat until hips are level with the knees before standing up. Similarly, another exercise which targets the strengthening of hip muscles is that of leg lifts. To do this exercise, one needs to begin by lying on one’s right side. Then, one should bend one’s right leg while resting the left foot on the ground. The top leg should be lifted slowly off the ground till about 2 feet. After holding the leg in that position for about five seconds, one should slowly lower the leg and perform the same exercise with the other leg.

To bring about the toning of one’s hip, one should perform a specific exercise which requires a smooth floor. One should stand with feet distanced apart along with keeping one of the feet on a paper plate. One should then skid the leg which is on the paper plate sideward while keeping the torso and abs upright. One can bend the other knee if necessary. Repeat this procedure with the other foot also and it can help a lot in the effective toning of hips. Following some regular exercises can help in the healthy functioning of one’s hip area along with aiding in the promotion of a healthy body image.
