Healthy Fats for the Body

October 27, 2009

healthy_foodCan fats be healthy? Most people will answer in the negative as books and papers usually talk about the negative effects of fat. However, you will be surprised to know that there are certain fats that are healthy and are actually needed by the body for its smooth functioning. Read below and find out about such healthy fats.

Fats have usually been associated with obesity, heart attacks, strokes and other serious problems. While there is no denying the fact that certain fats are harmful for the body, it is also true that there are some fats that are good for your overall health.

Unsaturated fats are the healthy fats which are required by the body and they help in promoting your overall health, including cardiovascular and neurological health.

Fats are majorly found in cooking oils. It is for this reason that you should pay attention to the cooking oil you choose as your choice will have a direct impact on your health. Olive and peanut oil are monounsaturated oils and are healthy for the body.

Similarly, polyunsaturated oils are also beneficial and they can be found in vegetable oils like in those of sunflower or safflower.

Along with the above mentioned oils, you can also provide your body with the required healthy fats through intake of nuts and omega 3-rich foods like flaxseeds. Due to the beneficial fats present in nuts, the latter are considered as beneficial food items for the health of your heart.

Saturated and Trans fat are your health’s enemies and you must stay away from them. Thus, it is advised that you should reduce your intake of butter and animal products.

While the above mentioned unsaturated fats are beneficial for the body, one should not over-indulge in them. Everything works well in limit and thus you should follow the golden rule of moderation to leverage the benefits of healthy fats.
