Health benefits of water chestnut

Water chestnuts are the most commonly eaten nut in India. They are not really nuts but tubers that are grown wild in marshes of the shallow water along the lake banks. It has a dark-brown skin, ivory flesh crisp texture and a lightly sweet nutty flavor. This crunchy tuber is a staple in Chinese coking. It is more like a low calorie vegetable. They enhance the taste of salads and appetizers containing very less amount of fats. They are good source of fiber and B vitamins. They are also good source of carbohydrate, making it a good replacement for grains. They also contain fair amounts of calcium, potassium, iron and zinc.

Water chestnuts have numerous curative and supplementing properties in themselves they are known as cooling food and are excellent way to beat heat of summer season. Not only this, water chestnut powder mixed with water is a great reliever in case of cough. If you experience pain during urination, then drinking a cup of sweet soup of water chestnut can really you in a big way. You will be glad to read that the juice of water chestnut alleviates nausea and indigestion. Water chestnuts are believed to cure jaundice too in a great way. It also has detoxifying properties. Dried and ground chestnut atta can be used to make rottis, as they are good source of energy. You can even consume water chestnut in their raw form as a mid-evening snack. You can even steam or sauté them, as you like. It can be a good food too especially if one is observing fast, giving him or her plenty of energy.

But mind it that water chestnuts are low in protective antioxidants. They are extremely cold and laxative in nature and should not be eaten in excess otherwise it can lead to gas trouble in stomach and bloating.
