Health Benefits of Turmeric

June 25, 2008

Considered as one of the most powerful healers of nature, Turmeric is useful for maintaining a healthy self due to its anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. The benefits of turmeric to human health may include arthritis prevention and treatment, treatment of diseases of the immune system, support of a healthy immune system and the prevention of many forms of cancer. The active constituent of Turmeric, known as curcumin, is believed to be responsible for the medicinal and therapeutic properties of turmeric.

Turmeric is good for the treatment of digestive disorders as curcumin, one of the active ingredients of turmeric, helps in breaking down fats by inducing the flow of bile. Moreover, curcumin is an anti-inflammatory agent which helps in relieving the aches and pains associated with arthritis. Turmeric also has antiseptic properties and is thus helpful in disinfecting cuts and burns. It is due to this reason that turmeric is applied on wounds as it serves as a natural herb for preventing bacterial infection in wounds.
Turmeric powder, when consumed regularly, can help in the improvement of blood circulation and in blood purification. Studies have shown that turmeric helps in the prevention and blockage of the growth of tumor cells, breast cancer, colon cancer and other cancers. It is also believed to prevent ‘bad’ cholesterol and is also useful for the cure of liver problems. Turmeric’s beneficial properties have also been reported in the treatment of allergy, asthma, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and others.

Turmeric is also an important ingredient in improving the ‘beauty appeal’ of a person. Applying a paste of turmeric and milk cream can help in giving glow to one’s skin. Moreover, a paste of turmeric and milk cream or turmeric and curd, when applied on stomach, helps in lightening of stretch marks. It is also believed that a regular intake of turmeric can help in the reduction of fats, thus aiding in the process of weight loss.
Besides being used for its therapeutic benefits, turmeric is also popular as a food additive.
Hence, one should include turmeric in one’s diet to remain fit, healthy and happy.
