The bright color of pumpkins which distinguishes it from other vegetables is an indication of health. This is because the bright color indicates presence of an important antioxidant- beat carotene.  Beta carotene in turn helps in providing protection from various kinds of cancers along with ensuring the overall health of a person. This is because beta carotene helps in neutralizing free radicals in the body which can harm one’s health. Additionally, pumpkins are also a good source of other antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin which protect the eye by preventing cataracts and macular degeneration. If you are a smoker, then intake of pumpkin can prove helpful as the former contains an important cartenoid which can decrease the risk of lung cancer. In addition to important antioxidants, pumpkins are nutritional by nature as they are a good source of vitamins A, C, K and E along with being a rich source of minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium. They can thus promote the formation of red blood cells, prevent osteoporosis and even aid the bowel health through its fiber content. The seeds of pumpkins are another healthy portion of the vegetable. They are loaded with essential minerals and have an anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, pumpkin seeds can also help prevent prostate cancer and osteoporosis.
