Health Benefits of Oats

June 24, 2008

A bowl of oat meal in the breakfast is the healthiest form of starting one’s morning. Oats are one of the best sources of soluble fiber, which help in the reduction of total cholesterol along with LDL or “bad” cholesterol. In addition to reducing the risk of heart disease, oat fiber also helps to control blood sugar. They also contain a high content of calcium, potassium and magnesium along with high quantity of B complex which together help in the healthy functioning of the nervous system.

Oats, like other grains and vegetables, contains in themselves a large quantity of phytochemicals which in turn are believed to bring about a reduction in one’s risk of getting cancer. While most of the research has concentrated on its benefit of helping decrease the chances of breast cancer, similar effects are also expected in other hormone- related diseases such as prostate and ovarian cancer. Because of its high fiber content, it is also beneficial in protection against bowel cancer.

A regular intake of oats can help in the reduction of one’s cholesterol and blood pressure thus aiding in the healthy functioning of one’s heart. Intake of unrefined oatmeal helps to reduce stress while cooked oats can be taken to relieve oneself from fatigue. Oat contain soluble fiber which slows down the digestion of starch and thus proves beneficial for diabetic patients as it prevents the sharp rise in blood sugar level which generally occurs after meals. While the soluble fiber of oat helps in the prevention of cholesterol absorption by the body, the insoluble fiber present in it is useful to treat digestion related problems like constipation. In addition, oats also act as a natural anti-depressant which helps to treat tension, anxiety and nervous disorder.

Oats can also be used as a form of water therapy which can help heal eczema and other skin related disorders. Oats contain a good balance of essential fatty acids which promote general good health and also have one of the best amino acid profile which helps in the optimum functioning of the body.
