January 14, 2009

You must have often bought mint gums and candies as mouth fresheners. However, along with refreshing your breath, mint is known for its medicinal properties. The mint family is one of the most useful culinary and medicinal herb families and a few species of this invaluable family include basil, lemon balm and rosemary amongst others. Let’s look at the health benefits of mint in detail.

Mint has long been known for its powerful healing effects, with the most common being its usefulness in stomach and digestion related disorders. The oils of the peppermint oil help in relieving pain and spasms of the gastrointestinal tract. It soothes the digestive tract and helps in reducing the severity and duration of stomach aches. The strong and pleasing aroma of this herb also helps in promoting digestion and is thus considered as a good appetizer. The strong aroma of mint also helps in naturally treating nausea. Just smelling mint and taking in its aroma is enough to prevent and stop nausea. It is a known home remedy to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

Similarly, mints are used as balms due to their strong smell and when rubbed on forehead and nose, mint helps in providing relief from headaches along with relaxing your mind. Also, rubbing of mint on the nose and throat can help in relieving congestion of nose, throat, lungs and others. Another common and popular use of mint is in oral care. It inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria. Mint oil is also a great anti septic and anti pruritic and can thus be used to naturally treat skin problems like acne, pimples, itching and other skin infections. According to studies, mints can also help in preventing the formation of colon, lung and skin cancer. To sum it up, mint is a great natural herb which not only refreshes with its strong aroma, but also naturally prevents and heals various ailments.
