Health Benefits of Legumes

December 31, 2008

Legumes, that is pulses and soybeans, are beneficial for the overall health and wellness of a person. They are rich dietary sources of good quality proteins, carbohydrates, fiber and a variety of minerals and vitamins which help in keeping one’s mind and body in healthy condition. Given below are various nutritional and health benefits of legumes which indicate the importance of legumes in daily diet.

A staple food in all parts of the world, legumes are rich in soluble fiber. This in turn helps in lowering the level of LDL or bad cholesterol thereby ensuring the cardiovascular health of a person. Along with lowering the risk of heart diseases, legumes are also beneficial for diabetic patients. This is because, legumes help in slowing down carbohydrate absorption which in turn helps in preventing the highs and lows in blood sugar levels. Legumes are not only rich in soluble fiber, but also in insoluble fiber which in turn is required to keep the digestive system healthy, especially to ward off problems of constipation and other digestion related ones. The nutritional value of legumes helps in meeting the nutritional requirement of the body.

Legumes contain important nutrients and phytochemicals and when combined with grains, they form a complete protein. They are rich in important nutrients like folic acid, copper, iron and magnesium which will ensure the healthy functioning of the body. Beans contain a significant amount of antioxidants, folic acid, vitamin B6 and magnesium. Along with providing the body with required amount of nutrients, legumes also help in providing protection against cancer. Thus, to sum it up, legumes help in reducing the risk of chronic ailments like cardiovascular disorders, diabetes mellitus, cancer and even osteoporosis. To conclude, we can say that including legumes in diet are an intelligent way of staying fit, healthy and happy.
