June 26, 2008
The best means to stay fit and healthy is by adopting a simple and a natural way of life as nature with its natural products is the best way to prevent and cure ailments without causing any negative effect. Nothing explains this better than Ginger which is known as the “King of Spices” in India. Along with adding spice to one’s food, Ginger is known for its powerful curative properties as it plays an important role in treating different ailments effectively.
It is for this reason that it has earned the reputation of being a universal medicine by Ayurveda and it is thus valued throughout the world as a cooking spice and a healing herb.
While Ginger has various health benefits, it’s effectiveness on the digestive system is perhaps its greatest strength known from ancient times. It is said that Ginger helps to stimulate the flow of bile from gall bladder which helps in digestion. If taken before meals, it helps to prevent the symptoms of indigestion and if taken after meals, it helps in the process of digestion. Due to its muscle relaxing action, Ginger also brings relief to menstrual cramps and indigestion. It has been found that when ginger is taken internally, it stimulates the release of salivary enzymes and encourages stomach emptying which in turn helps in the treatment of motion sickness and pregnancy related nausea and vomiting.
Ginger is also known to help reduce inflammation and is thus used to cure diseases like arthritis and ulcerative colitis. Being a warm herb, Ginger helps to ward off fever, cough and cold. The warming effect of Ginger makes it a perfect natural decongestant and is thus the best treatment for cold. Now, one can understand why every grandma focuses on the drinking of ginger tea during cold and flu. Ginger has also shown promising results in the treatment of circulatory and respiratory problems, allergies, heart problem, high cholesterol and sexual deficiencies. According to the experiments conducted on mice, it was found that Ginger could be used in the treatment of cancer in the nearing future.
The healing properties of ginger are derived from its volatile oils, gingerols and shogaols which are also responsible for its pungent taste. Thus, due to the possession of so many health benefits, ginger should be made a daily household item to attain a healthy and a happy life.
