Headaches in Children

January 10, 2009

Does your child frequently complain about headaches? When it comes to headaches in children, parents tend to react in various ways. While some think that the child is making an excuse to avoid his homework, there are others who react in an extreme way and link headaches to tumors and serious ailments. However, headaches are a common ailment in school going children. There are various factors which can lead to headaches but if your child complains of it too often, then it should be got checked from a doctor as frequent occurring headaches can be a sign of some serious ailments too.

Children usually have a developing and sensitive immune system and are thus prone to many infections like ear and throat infections, cough, cold and flu which in turn can lead to headaches. Certain conditions in the environment like weather changes can lead to headaches in children. If there is a family history of migraines running in the family, then there is a high possibility that your child may have migraine headaches. If you thought stress and tension headaches are uncommon in children, you are wrong.

Children too face tensions of peers, studies and school. Children also tend to get headaches through food allergies. Also, certain beverages which contain caffeine can trigger headaches. However, if the headaches are recurrent and frequent, and if they are caused by any head injury, then you need to consult a doctor.

For other kinds of headaches, there are certain simple ways by which they can be treated. Change your child’s diet and also encourage exercising as that can help in increasing blood circulation which in turn helps in preventing headaches. There are also various medications available for the treatment of mild to severe headaches. However, before taking medications, consult your doctor.
