June 11, 2009

hammertoeAs the name suggests, hammer toe is a problem or deformity of the toe in which the tip of the toe is bent downward, making the toe look like a hammer.

Though common in people with small toes, there are various factors that can lead to a hammer toe. This article will look at some of the causes and symptoms of this toe deformity.

The most common factor that can lead to a hammer toe is ill fitting shoe. If you wear shoes that are too tight and which compress your toes, then you are putting yourself at a risk of developing this toe deformity.

Constant pressure on toes from tight shoes is a major cause of hammer toe and thus while choosing shoes, you should ensure they are comfortable and proper fitting ones.

Many women wear high heeled shoes to enhance their height. However, high heels are not too good for the health of your toes as they can lead to the problem of hammer toe.

Other causes that can lead to this problem include genetic nerve disorder and even certain problems or disease of the muscles and joints. Flat feet is another problem that can lead to a hammer toe.

After having looked at the various causes of hammer toe, let’s look at some of its common symptoms. Usually people suffering from this problem have pain in their toes and can also occasionally experience cramps not only in their toes but also in their feet and entire leg.

People affected by hammer toe often develop corns and calluses on their feet. The problem of hammer toe can also lead to other problems like infections and ulcers on feet.

Given above are some common causes and symptoms of hammer toe. As shown above, a majority of such causes can be prevented and thus, being aware of them helps in prevention and timely treatment of the problem.
