Hair Styles for Different Face Shapes
April 15, 2009
The seven basic facial shapes are described below, with hints for choosing flattering hairstyles.
Oval
The oval face is wider at the forehead than at the jaw. Many experts consider this to be the ideal shape due to its versatility.
Take time to accentuate your best features, by layering at the appropriate length.
Hairstyles should not include layers of short hair on the top of the head because this can elongate the face. Additionally, thick, curly hair should not be cut in a blunt style.
Rectangular
The rectangular face has a square chin and a narrow, elongated appearance. Haircuts with bangs will minimize the length of the face. Parting the hair to one side, or softening the overall look with curls or waves, can reduce the rectangular appearance.
Chin-length cuts can enhance the illusion of width, but short layers and extremes of length, either long or short, should be avoided, as they accentuate the length of the face.
Round
A round face has a symmetrical shape and a round chin. The most attractive hairstyle should add height and reduce the thickness that causes the sides to appear rounded.
The best styles have layers falling from the top of the head to below the chin. Short, blunt cuts and longer, one-length cuts should not be attempted, as they emphasize the roundness of the face.
Square
An individual with a square face should avoid chin-length cuts that magnify the square shape of the jaw.
Better styles include short, spiked cuts and longer, straight styles. For styles that include bangs, a blunt cut should be avoided. Soften the face’s natural shape by layering the hair and leaving some length to it.
Heart
Wide near the eyes, with the cheeks gradually sloping inward, the heart shaped face culminates in a small chin. Haircuts should accentuate any roundness in the chin. Blunt cuts of any length should be avoided.
Typically, the best features are the eyes and cheekbones; accentuate them with longer layers on top and waves or wispy locks brushed lightly across the cheekbones. For shorter styles, adding bangs brushed to one side may offer a similar soft look.
Pear
The pear-shaped face is rounded at the chin, narrowing from the jaw line to the temples.
The goal is to remove emphasis from the chin and draw it to the temples and forehead; choose a hairstyle that is fuller around the temples and above the ears.
Below the ears, hair should be cut to follow the chin, softening the roundness of the jaw line.
Diamond
Hair styles that accentuate the forehead and the chin, while softening the cheekbones, are suitable for the diamond shaped face. Adding bangs, and some volume around the chin, will emphasize these aspects of the face.
Parting the hair to one side, allowing it to fall across the forehead, widens the temples while providing just the proper emphasis to the cheeks. Uneven or asymmetric cuts that fall below the chin line can help by making the face appear shorter.

I wish i could fiqure out what face shape I have! I am a mixed race so its hard to decide what cut would look best!?! I have however added some bangs for a dramtica look, but need to find a home hair coloring kit, so I can add a little shimmer this summer!
