Habit of Stealing in Children
Have you ever found some unidentifiable pencil, pen or rubber in your child’s pencil box? And then suddenly you discover someone else’s notebook in his bag. If not kept a check, you might gradually discover that from stealing small things, your child has now started stealing money too. Wouldn’t this frighten and worry you as a parent? Stealing is one of the most common misdeeds children indulge in school days. Though it is not considered as a major crime, as a parent you need to check this habit in your child so as to prevent your child from trading the immoral and asocial track. However, before that you need to find out the reasons why your child steals.
Usually children start stealing due to unawareness. This implies that they still haven’t developed the skills to understand what is right and wrong. They can’t differentiate between their property and someone else’s one and thus tend to steal things. As a parent, you need to teach your child on basic social norms and morals. You need to make him understand and despite that, if he still steals, then you need to punish him so as to make him understand that stealing is a bad habit which should not be repeated. Many children also steal because they get attracted to other things and try to gain possession of it through wrong means. As a parent, you need to make your child understand that they should adopt right and moral ways to attain things of their desire. They can ask their parents and even slowly save up money instead of resorting to unacceptable behavior. It has also been found that children often copy their parents and if you have a habit of taking certain things which are not your own, then your child might end up doing the same. Be a positive role model for your child and teach him paths of honesty and integrity. Sometimes, children also steal due to peer pressure. Thus, you should keep a check on the kind of company your child keeps. Follow these steps to check the habit of stealing in your child. However, first find out the appropriate cause before trying to eliminate it.
