Frozen Shoulder

June 8, 2009

frozenshoulderWhen the shoulder joint gets stiff and there is restricted mobility of the shoulder region, then the condition is medically referred to as frozen shoulder.

The person affected faces difficulty and pain in moving his shoulders and he can also suffer from an inflammation of the joint muscles. This article will bring to light the various causes of frozen shoulder and ways by which it can be prevented and treated.

While there is no specific cause that has been associated with the problem of frozen shoulder, there are various factors that can lead to it. Chronic inflammatory arthritis is one such cause and other problems like tendonitis and bursitis can also lead to frozen shoulder.

Also, it has been found that people with diabetes are more susceptible to this problem. Several other medical problems like those related with heart have also been found to lead to this problem. In addition, physical injuries and trauma can also lead to a frozen shoulder.

Another common cause of frozen shoulder is immobilization. If you have not used your shoulder region for a long time due to a fracture or any other cause, then this immobility can lead to the problem of frozen shoulder over a course of time.

Immobility can also occur in people who have undergone a shoulder surgery and have followed it up with long term joint immobility.

After having looked at the various causes of frozen shoulder, let’s look at some ways by which you can ease the pain and overcome the problem quickly.

The pain associated with a frozen shoulder can be eased using hot compressor or ice packs. In addition, physiotherapy is extremely useful as it helps in rebuilding strength and flexibility of shoulders. There are various medications for treating a frozen shoulder and in some cases, surgery too is an option.
