Foot Cramps

A foot cramp is a painful contraction and tightening of the muscles in the foot area leading to immense pain and discomfort. People who suffer from foot cramps can display symptoms like sudden pain, discomfort and tightening of the foot area. Given blow are some causes which might lead to foot cramps. By being aware of the causes, you can easily prevent as well as treat the problem of painful foot cramps.

Foot cramps are painful and the pain not only lasts till the cramp is there, but also leaves the muscles to ache long after the cramp is over. If the frequency of foot cramps is more than normal, or if it is occurring quite frequently, then you need to consult a doctor to avoid further consequences. Here are some factors which can lead to foot cramps. Cramps are usually caused due to dehydration or overstressing of the muscles during exercises. Keep yourself well hydrated through adequate intake of water. Electrolyte imbalance and injury caused due to repetitive motion are also responsible for foot cramps. Further, loose and weak muscles due to lack of muscle strengthening exercises and a sedentary lifestyle can be considered guilty for foot cramps. Many times you must have noticed that sitting in one position for a long time or sitting with inappropriate leg positions often triggers off cramps in the foot region. Old worn-out footwear, low potassium levels and vitamin D deficiency are other causes. Some of the other medical conditions which can lead to foot cramps are diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, anemia, thyroid, hypoglycemia, hormonal imbalance, multiple sclerosis, illnesses of the nervous system, and foot problems like tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. Thus, being aware of the causes is one of the first steps towards preventing and treating the painful problem of foot cramps.
