Food Allergies

June 30, 2008

Do you often feel sick after eating food items like nuts, milk, eggs or seafood? If yes, then you may be suffering from food allergy. Though people can be allergic to any food, the widely recognized food allergens consist of milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, wheat, fish and tree nuts. Food allergies happen when one’s immune system mistakes the food one is eating as a harmful element and thus produces antibodies to fight against that substance. Once the antibodies get created, they immediately react on the food item whenever it is eaten and release chemical called histamine which acts upon the eyes, nose, skin and gastrointestinal tract of a person and causes symptoms of allergic reaction.

A person with a food allergy can have a mild reaction or a severe one after eating that particular food. The common reactions include a running nose, an itchy skin rash, wheezing, cough, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. In serious cases, a food allergy can cause anaphylaxis which is a severe, sudden allergic reaction in which several problems like skin, digestion, heart and others occur all at once. People with known severe reactions should be very careful in their diet and should avoid eating foods which may cause allergy.

Many people get confused between food allergy and food intolerance. Food intolerance happens when people react to a certain food but are not exactly allergic to it. This is generally seen in people with lactose intolerance. One needs to consult a doctor to find out if he actually has food allergy or not as this is tested through skin tests and blood tests.

There is no special medicine to treat food allergies but there are medicines to treat the symptoms and the allergic reactions caused by it. While there are certain food allergies which can be outgrown with age, there are certain which live forever. Thus, the best way is to avoid eating items which contain those food allergens.
