Food Allergies in Babies
July 24, 2008
If your baby develops rashes, vomiting or diarrhea after eating a new food item, it might be possible that your baby has the problem of food allergies. If a baby becomes allergic to the food, the body of the baby treats the food as an invader and creates antibodies for it. When the child eats that food again, he may get symptoms like itchy mouth and throat, rashes, wheezing, sneezing, cramping, nausea and unusual crying amongst others. Thus, while introducing new food items to the baby, parents should be aware of the various symptoms that might occur if your child has developed the problem of food allergy. Foods that are more common in causing allergies in babies are cow’s milk, egg whites, wheat, soy and most commonly peanut. In some rare cases, a child may develop serious allergic reaction like anaphylactic shock which requires immediate medical attention.
While children may become allergic to a food item when they directly consume it, there are also chances that a child develops this problem through nursing when he becomes allergic to something which the mothers may have eaten. Since a child’s body is tender and sensitive, one must consult a doctor for a test of food allergy and one should then take care to avoid giving them such food items. However, one can try some methods to reduce a child’s susceptibility to food allergies. These include taking the simple precaution of waiting for your child to grow up to 6 months before introducing solids in his diet. Babies have sensitive digestive system and hence, they cannot digest food properly until 4 to 6 months of age. Waiting until 6 months gives the best chance to a child to digest food properly which in turn implies less risk of food allergies. Moreover, if there is a family history of allergy to a particular food item, one should be extra careful while introducing such items in your baby’s diet. Parents should observe such simple precautions to prevent the problem of food allergies in your baby. Even if such allergies exist, they tend to be outgrown by the child with passing years. However, one should consult a doctor as a child’s life is sensitive with which no one should take a chance.
