Flat Feet

January 15, 2009

As the name suggests, flat feet implies feet which are flatter from the bottom and the middle of the feet, which is usually arched in normal feet, becomes more or less flat when a person stands up. In short, if you have flat feet, then the inside of your feet is flattened. Usually, flat fleet is a result of poor arch development in childhood or due to pregnancy.

Also, being overweight and overstraining of feet can lead to the trouble of flat feet. Genes too have found to play a role in this problem. If you have multiple injuries done to your foot and inflammations of the tendon region, then flat feet might approach you too. Given below are some symptoms and complications usually associated with flat feet.

Here are some symptoms associated with flat feet. Visually, flat feet can be made out from their look itself as they seem much flatter at the bottom. Uneven shoe wear and collapsing of  your shoe towards the inside of your foot is another way to recognize flat feet. Other symptoms include lower leg pain, foot pain, pain and swelling on the inside of your ankle and others.

Usually flat feet do not require any treatment, unless of course it is painful and causing you difficulties in movement. Some of the complications which can be caused by flat feet include pain and inflammation in the ligaments of the feet causing movement restrictions; Achilles tendonitis; arthritis in foot or ankle; stress fractures in the lower region of the leg; bunions; and calluses amongst others.

Depending upon the problem, flat feet and its related trouble can be treated accordingly via pain and anti-inflammatory medication, shoe inserts, rest and even surgery if needed. As a precaution, you must avoid stressing your foot and thus involve your feet in non-weight bearing exercises so that you remain fit without hurting your foot.
