First Aid for Burns

December 2, 2008

Knowing the basic first aid treatment tips for burns is the best way to prevent the condition from becoming serious. There are four degrees of burns depending upon the severity level and the treatment differs for all. Burns can be caused by chemicals, fire, acids, electricity and others. Thus, it is always better to be aware of some first aid tips so as to help the victim immediately before medical assistance is given. Given below are such essential first aid tips for burns.

First-degree burns are minor burns which cover only a small area of the body. If these minor burns occur, you need to cool the area with water for about 10-15 minutes. However, do not use ice. Instead you should wash the area well with mild soap and water. Then cover it with a clean soft bandage that will help in decreasing pain. You can apply antibiotic ointment on the affected area and elevating the burned arm or leg can also help. Second degree burns are characterized by blisters and discharge of serum. Severe sunburns also constitute second degree burns. For providing first aid treatment, you should immerse the burned area in running cold water, dress it up and make the victim take plenty of fluids. Also, remove any clothing that has been burned. Similar first aid treatment needs to be given to other kinds of burns too. However, you need to consult a doctor in case of severe burns, especially third and fourth degree burns. Moreover, call a doctor if nausea or vomiting occurs, there is persistent fever of 102F or more, or if there is increase in redness and pain.

Given above are some useful and a must-know first aid treatments which can prove extremely helpful in preventing the situation from becoming severe.
