Fibromyalgia
A recently recognized disorder, Fibromyalgia is regarded as a chronic condition which is characterized by non-inflammatory pain and tenderness in muscles, ligaments and joints. More women than men are afflicted by Fibromyalgia and it is accompanied by an ache all over the body with the muscles giving a feel of being overworked or pulled. It is very similar to Chronic Fatigue syndrome with the only difference being that while CFS is characterized by fatigue, Fibromyalgia is all about musculoskeletal pain.
This condition of Fibromyalgia is more common in women after menopause and these women have less muscle strength in their legs than their healthy counterparts. In addition, there is also a sleeping disorder which is associated with this problem and it is known as the alpha-EEG anomaly. Irritable bowel syndrome, PMS, painful periods and chronic headaches are other symptoms which are associated with Fibromyalgia.
The diet of a person suffering from Fibromyalgia should consist of vegetable juices and soups, coconut water, green salad and spices like cumin, coriander, ginger and garlic. One should avoid eating hot, spicy and fried food and should keep oneself away from anxiety, stress and tension.
It has been found that fibromyalgia is worsened by heightened stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. Thus, medication and yoga can be helpful to treat this disease as they bring about physical and spiritual healing effects. Yogasana or various stretching exercises have also been found to create a healthy flexibility throughout the body which in turn has a positive effect on fibromyalgia. According to the International Journal of Sports Medicine, a strength training session which focuses on the overall training of physical fitness should be set up for women suffering from fibromyalgia as strength training exercises can help to treat this problem. In addition, it has been found that a healthy lifestyle with a balanced and a healthy daily routine can help to prevent and even cure Fibromyalgia.
