Fever in Children

January 20, 2009

Fever is one of the most common ailment which affects many people, small children and infants in particular. In simple terms, fever is a condition in which the body temperature is higher than usual. It has been generally defined as a rectal temperature over 100.4oF. Given below are the various factors which can lead to fever along with a mentioning of some symptoms and modes of treatment.

Fever usually occurs as a result of body’s defense against viruses or bacteria. It is a part of body’s defense mechanism which produces a lot of heat and thus raises the child’s temperature. Some causes of fever in children include infections-viral or bacterial, medications, and also due to heat illnesses.

Fever in children is usually accompanied by the child becoming irritable, cranky, lethargic and fatigued, along with displaying symptoms of headache, body ache, rapid breathing and high temperature. When a child suffers from fever, it is important to increase his intake of water. Having liquids is important to keep the body hydrated. If the child refuses to have water or liquids at one go, try giving him little by little at frequent intervals. More than food, it is the intake of liquids and fluids that is important. Also, give the child proper rest and sleep to help the body rejuvenate and recover.

While fevers are usual in children, you should consult a doctor if your child is very small, especially if he is below 3 months. Also, if the child’s fever refuses to go down in three days or if he is suffering from very high fever, it should be consulted by a doctor. In addition, you should also seek for medical attention if the following symptoms are seen in the child: hallucinations, seizures, rashes, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, troubled breathing and other suspicious or unnatural symptoms.
