Facts about Fibroids
Fibroids are the most common growth in a women’s reproductive system and they are benign tumors which grow in the uterus. As against its name, fibroids consist of muscle tissues and not fibrous tissues. Moreover, they may grow as a single tumor and can also occur in clusters. While symptoms of this problem can range from heavy vaginal bleeding and pain to incontinence or infertility, there are also many women who have the problem of fibroids but without any display of symptoms. Many women face with this problem and it is the major cause of hysterectomy or removal of the uterus. Medications and new forms of treatment can also help in prevention and treatment of fibroids.
Fibroids are more common in women in childbearing age. While the exact cause of fibroids is still under research, it is generally attributed to the influence of oestrogen. It is due to this reason that fibroids are more common in women’s middle years when the levels of oestrogen are high and they stop growing after menopause when there is a drop in this hormone level. In addition, being obese or overweight and late pregnancy is seen as other contributing factors to the development of fibroids.
One of the most common myths associated with fibroids is the thinking that fibroid tumors can turn cancerous sometime in life. However, it has been proved and well researched that fibroids are non-cancerous and they can have no associations with cancer. While fibroids are benign, they can lead to other complications like anemia, infertility, problems during urination, premature delivery and miscarriage. They are generally characterized by heavy bleeding during periods, constipation and pain in passing urine, anemia, back pain, infertility, swelling in abdomen and several miscarriages.
Since the exact cause of fibroids is still unknown, there are no exact preventive measures. However, it has been found that keeping one’s weight under check, eating green vegetables and fruits and avoiding red meat can all help in preventing the development of fibroids.
