Enhance your Health with Vegetarian Diet

September 30, 2008

The world is singing sagas of vegetarianism and it seems as if being veggie is one of the latest health promotion trend. A growing body of scientific evidence claims that wholesome vegetarian dietoffers distinct advantages as compared to diets containing meat and other foods of animal origin. This is in fact an answer to existing theories that being pure vegetarian implied having a diet lacking in proteins and essential minerals. Now, it has been proved that being a vegetarian is not a lack but a strength which enhances your health leading to the overall well being of a person.

The reason why being a veggie is considered as a healthy option is because it implies lower intake of saturated fats, cholesterol and animal protein as well as higher intake of complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, magnesium, folic acid, vitamins C and E, along with cartenoids and phytochemicals. The myth that vegetarian diet lacked nutrients was basically a result of poor meal planning. In the past, vegetarian diets have been described as being deficient in several nutrients including protein, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin B12 and A, n-3 fatty acids and iodine. Since vegetarianism imply a great range of food items, you need to ensure your body receives all essential nutrients through proper diet selection which should be well balanced in nature. The myth about protein deficiency in vegetarian diet has been countered by recent studies which claim that green vegetable protein is as high in quality as milk protein and thus makes a very valuable contribution to the vegetarian’s protein nutrition.

Just like a vegetarian diet helps in providing all the essential nutrients to the body, it also helps in protecting it from various ailments which occur as a result of eating meat like auto-intoxication or self-poisoning. The flesh of animals is often a carrier of disease germs, a problem not witnessed by vegetarian form of eating. It has various other benefits like being low in fat content and cholesterol thereby protecting body from heart ailments and even breast and colon cancer. Being a veggie is thus being considered as a new fitness mantra which would enhance the health of your body along with aiding in spiritual health.
