Emotional Eating

January 13, 2009

We all have heard about emotional eating, but let’s look at it in detail to understand the causes which triggers this kind of eating disorder and ways in which to control it. Many of us tend to eat a lot when emotionally upset and depressed. This is known as emotional eating as the person eating is not hungry but instead eating provides him with emotional comfort. So, the next time you find yourself munching something when sad, angry, depressed, lonely or stressed, then you are most probably indulging in emotional eating. Thus, in emotional eating, you eat for your feelings, not for hunger. However, this is an unhealthy eating habit and a kind of eating disorder which leads to overeating thereby resulting in a person becoming overweight.

Usually, emotional eating is triggered by feelings and factors which can be social, emotional, situational, or psychological. This kind of eating is definitely not a natural response to hunger. You need to control emotional eating so as to prevent unhealthy weight gain. First of all, learn to recognize true hunger from emotional eating and don’t give in to food cravings. Avoid keeping unhealthy, fatty snacks around you so that even if you eat, you will be eating healthy food. Moreover, if your body is fatigued and is devoid of necessary calorie intake, then you might experience emotional eating.

Thus, always have a healthy and a well balanced diet to cater to the nutritional demands of the body. Try diverting your mind from food and instead read books, listen to music or go for a walk. Going for a walk also helps in enlivening up one’s mood thereby preventing emotional eating.  Similarly, yoga and meditation also try to calm one’s mind and body thereby bringing them in equilibrium. Thus, follow these simple tips to avoid emotional eating.
